Alumnus who took part in a RNLI rescue mission in Mozambique visits the college after 20 years.

Aguinaldo Namburete from the AC '00 took a walk down memory lane for the first time in more than two decades earlier this month whilst visiting Wales on British Council business.

During his time as a student at UWC Atlantic he was heavily involved in the RNLI after qualifying as a crewman and was regularly involved in rescues here off the heritage coast. He really put those skills into practice, when just after qualifying, the RNLI were at St Donats to officially launch a new lifeboat at a special ceremony. It was at that meeting that the RNLI mentioned that they were sending a crew out to Mozambique to help with the devastating floods caused by Cyclone Leon-Eline.

"I flew all the way to Africa with the RNLI and spent two weeks, as a team of seven supporting the rescue operation after the most devastating floods in years in Mozambique. It felt amazing to be able to help."

Aguinaldo then volunteered to be part of the mission, as he was local to the affected area and spoke the language, and of course, was qualified. Our then Principal Colin Jenkins released him from the college for a few weeks. Aguinaldo was crucial to the rescue mission, getting doctors and medical supplies to inaccessible areas and of course, checking on his own parents.

Shortly after graduating from UWC Atlantic, he continued his education locally at Cardiff University before gaining a position at the British Council in Mozambique where he works to this day. He was appointed as Country Director in December and is now  leading the country operation, delivering our cultural relations work through a portfolio of projects and programmes mainly in Education.

Outside of work level, Agui has continued taking part in voluntary engagements supporting many different organisations over the years including a number of community development initiatives and projects in Maputo province.

As always, it was lovely to have a familiar face back on campus!
